Streamlabs vs OBS for Casino Widgets

Streamlabs Desktop and OBS Studio share an engine, which is why almost every overlay works in both. Where they differ matters less than people think — and in one specific way, more.

What is genuinely the same

Any widget delivered as a URL is a browser source, and both apps render browser sources with the same Chromium build. A bonus hunt overlay, a leaderboard, an alert box — if it works in one, it works in the other. Transparency, custom CSS and the refresh behaviour are all identical.

Where they diverge

Streamlabs ships an integrated alert and widget system. Convenient at the start, and limiting later — you are working inside their widget catalogue. OBS ships almost nothing and expects you to bring sources, which is more setup and fewer walls.

Resource use

Streamlabs carries more UI and background services. On a machine that is also running a casino in a browser plus a capture, that overhead is real. If you are dropping frames, this is worth testing before you buy hardware.

Scene portability

Moving a Streamlabs setup to OBS, or to a second PC, is tedious. Every browser source has to be re-added and repositioned by hand.

The thing that actually decides it

Neither app solves the real problem: your overlay lives inside your streaming software. Rebuild a scene, switch machines, or hand setup to someone else, and you are re-adding sources one at a time.

The way around that is to keep the layout outside the app entirely. Build it once in a stream layout editor, then add the whole thing as a single browser source. One URL. Edits appear live without opening OBS or Streamlabs, and moving to a different machine means pasting one link.

At that point the Streamlabs-vs-OBS question shrinks to preference, because your overlay is not stored in either.

Practical recommendation

• Starting out, want fewer decisions: Streamlabs.
• Care about performance or want full control: OBS.
• Either way: keep the layout outside the app so the choice stays reversible.
